Information Communication Technology (ICT) forms one of the core strengths of the Urban Unit. It provides real time information to decision makers in a cost effective and efficient way. Decision makers are able to make quicker and empirical choices by minimizing costs and human resources. With the ongoing rapid urbanization, ICT is the foundation of an economy and driving force behind social and economic change and adaptability in the 21st century. The objective is to create a knowledge base, transparent system of governance and service delivery. Through optimal use of ICT and effective IT-related solutions, the Urban Unit has facilitated the transition from a conservative to modern approach through building bridges between service providers and the communities to ensure transparency in projects at provincial, national and international levels.
ICT at the Urban Unit comprises of a host of computer-based and technology driven information systems. The Urban Unit promotes the use of ICT to provide integrated and real time solutions in a wide range of urban sectors including Urban Development and Planning, Community Development, Poverty Alleviation, Water and Sanitation, Solid Waste Management, Health, Basic Education, Transport and Emergency Response. The Urban Unit has extensively and intensively used IT based solutions in various social development projects in the health and education sector.
